Student Information and Permission Slip

Battle of the Books is a motivational reading program that consists of reading books, practicing as a team, and having a friendly "battle" in the spring. This year's Battle of the Books teams will include students in grades 3-5. To become a member of a team, a student must:

  1. Have parent permission.
  2. Commit to reading at least 4 of the 8 books by the end of March.
  3. Be willing to meet with a coach for practices on a regular basis starting in January.

Goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension and promote academic excellence.

Books will be available starting now. Students may check them out of our library, they can check them out of the public library, or you may purchase them on your own. Each team consists of four members and a coach who will find time to work on practice questions (on a weekly basis) starting in January. The practice questions will be supplied to the coaches, who will make a plan to ensure that all 10-12 books are read, but are not responsible for reading the books themselves. We will have battles with other Heiman teams in mid-March and the winners will "battle" with other district schools at the end of March.

If your child is interested in this program, please contact MR. ZWICKLE, Library and Educational Technology Specialist.
